your body, 2024, multimedia installation, 15 x 20 x 15
“your body” is a multimedia installation featuring a laptop constructed out of spare parts with acrylic paint on the screen and the webcam engaged, displayed, and actively filming. The writing on the screen is a work of prosaic stream of consciousness detailing the beginning, duration, and end of a gay relationship between the artist and an unnamed individual. The webcam on the laptop is engaged and actively recording the audience as they examine the laptop and try to decipher the script. “your body” speaks to the ephemerality of relationships that begin and end digitally. Descriptions of real, visceral moments of sexual passion contrast with the deconstructed laptop to elicit a feeling of discomfort and unease with the object as it is. The webcam recording the viewer furthers this uneasiness, disarming the viewer and documenting their interactions with the installation. All video recordings made during the installation of “your body” are printed onto a flash drive and handed to a stranger on the street.
“your body” debuted at the McGill University Fine Arts Commission’s exhibition entitled Liminal Spaces on January 22, 2024.
